The OptiMOS™ 6 100 V with a new power MOSFET technology

Infineon Technologies AG introduces the OptiMOSTM 6 100 V with a significant advancement in technology that will set a new industry standard for high switching frequency applications such as telecom and solar

Today’s switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and battery-powered applications have a clear trend toward greater efficiency and reliability. For applications such as these, Infineon Technologies AG introduces the OptiMOSTM 6 100 V with a new power MOSFET technology.

For high switching frequency applications, such as telecom and solar, the new technology is specifically optimized to reduce losses resulting from charges (switching) and on-state resistance (conduction).

In addition, its best-in-class R DS(on) and wide safe operating area (SOA) makes it a great fit for battery-powered applications (BPA) and battery management systems (BMS), according to company.

Due to a novel design concept, the OptiMOS 6 100 V family of MOSFETs features improved R DS(on) and the industry’s best figures of merit (FOMs). These features provide the benefits of exceptionally low on-state resistance and superior switching performance.

Also, the unique features of OptiMOS 6 allow for easier thermal design and less paralleling, which leads to higher efficiency, increased power density, lower system costs, and a longer lifecycle.

The OptiMOS 6, will revolutionize the telecom market by achieving 18 percent lower RDS(on) and 30 percent improved FOMs (R DS(on) x Q g and Q gd), as compared to the OptiMOS 5.

In a 600 W, -(36-60) V to 12 V ZVS buck-boost converter, the OptiMOS 6 in SuperSO8 package with 2.2 mΩ can achieve one percent higher efficiency than the OptiMOS 5 BSC027N10NS5 (2.7 mΩ) across the whole load range, according to company.

With improved charges and R DS(on), power loss is reduced by 7 W, resulting in 15 percent higher power density. The company says that the new technology in the 100V range helps reduce conduction and switching loss along with reducing the need for paralleling parts, among other benefits.

According to company statement, the energy efficient OptiMOS 6 100 V contributes to a more greener and sustainable world.

In the context of the telecom power system, the annual electricity savings potential of switching to MOSFET technology is equal to the energy consumption of 170 households. The device could help reduce energy consumption by one million Euros over a ten-year period*

Availability: OptiMOS 6 100 V is now available in SuperSO8 5×6 and PQFN 3.3×3.3 packages in a broad range of R DS(on) classes from industry best-in-class to price/performance optimized.
