Amara Raja to build India’s first Green Hydrogen Fueling Station project

NTPC has awarded Amara Raja Power Systems the contract to build India’s first green hydrogen fueling station in Leh, Ladakh, on the basis of their technical expertise.

NTPC has awarded Amara Raja Power Systems Ltd. the contract to build India’s first green hydrogen fueling station in Leh, Ladakh. This will provide drivers in the region with clean, renewable fuel options and help reduce emissions. The successful completion of this project will usher in a new era of emission-free transport in and around Leh, and India will be one of the few countries to lead this green transport sector. Initially, NTPC has plans to start with 5 hydrogen fuel cells buses in the region.

This pilot project will be set up in the extreme conditions of Leh at an altitude of 3600m above sea level with a temperature range of -14 degrees to +20 degrees Celsius. NTPC has selected  Amara Raja Power Systems, part of the US$1.3 billion Amara Raja group, to carry out this initiative on the basis of their technical expertise.

The production of green hydrogen will be achieved by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using an electrolysis process powered by renewable energy sources. This hydrogen production method leaves no carbon footprint. This pilot project will generate at least 80kg/day of 99.97% pure hydrogen, which will be compressed, stored, and delivered.

Speaking about this prized project, Amara Raja Executive Director Vikramadithya Gourineni stated, “We have been in the power systems and energy storage industry for three decades and have always strived to be on the cutting edge of technology. The potential for hydrogen as a future energy source is significant, and initiatives like these are important to demonstrate this. We are honored to continue serving NTPC as a reliable contractor.”

“This demanding project will reinforce our EPC competence, and we are extremely thrilled about being the first to explore the green hydrogen infrastructure space,” said Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head of the EPC business.
