As part of a larger effort to reform ailing state distribution companies, the government is putting its best effort into implementing smart metering projects across the country.
Efforts are being made by the government to spend the INR 1.5 lakh crore allotted for the implementation of smart metering in India, successfully.
According to Atul Bali, Chief General Manager, National Smart Grid Mission, Ministry of Power, the government is pursuing the scheme of Revamped Distribution Reforms which targets an overall outlay of INR 3 lakh crore, of which INR 1.5 lakh crore has been allocated to smart metering implementation.
He stated this at the recently held ETEnergyworld’s Smart Metering Summit, he was speaking in a panel discussion entitled, “Smart metering as a Cornerstone for Power Reforms”. The second edition of the Smart Metering Summit was attended by experts from the entire smart metering landscape.
Bali further informed that 25 crore smart meters are targeted by the government for installation by the end of 2025, but the main objective is to install 10 crore meters by Dec 2023.
Bali noted that advanced metering infrastructure ranks among the top five technologies for smart grids and smart meters will play a significant role in maximizing revenues.
Other areas where Smart Metering can benefit are reliability, operations and maintenance costs reduction, and renewable energy integration, he said.
