NTPC and EDF signed MoU for global cooperation in power sector

In addition to exchanging knowledge and expertise, EDF and NTPC will explore new power project development opportunities in countries of mutual interest.


An important development throughout the global power industry came with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between French company Électricité de France and India’s NTPC Ltd. 

Électricité de France S.A. (EDF), one of the world’s leading power sector companies headquartered in Paris, France, and NTPC Ltd, India’s largest energy integrated company, have signed an MoU to explore opportunities for power project development internationally. According to Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings, NTPC is currently ranked second among independent power producers.

On behalf of NTPC, Shri Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya, Director (Projects) signed the MOU in the distinguished presence of His Excellency Jawed Ashraf (Ambassador of India to France), His Excellency Emmanuel Lenain (Ambassador of France to India) and Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC. 

Other dignataries present on the occasion were Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General – ISA, Shri A K Gautam, Director (Finance) NTPC, Shri C K Mondol, Director (Commercial) NTPC, Mr. Harmanjit Singh Nagi, CEO & Country President – EDF India, Shri N M Gupta, Head of International Business – NTPC along with senior executives from NTPC, EDF, ISA and the French Embassy in India.

This MoU serves as a testament to the collaboration between EDF, France, and India’s largest power company NTPC for exploring development opportunities for power projects in regions of mutual interest, such as the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. Collaborations between the two companies will also extend to knowledge sharing, R&D, technical services, and consultancy assignments around the world. 

A statement from NTPC expressed optimism about the collaboration with EDF and mentioned that the collaboration would boost our competitiveness. NTPC aims to expand its global portfolio of power generation assets. 

NTPC noted that the MOU is in line with the company’s roadmap for clean energy development globally. The alliance will bring many mutually beneficial investment opportunities in global markets.

According to EDF, they are excited to work with NTPC on low-carbon energy developments in India and other growing markets. Currently operating in more than 25 countries, EDF has gained valuable experience globally and is looking forward to expanding it further in co-operation with NTPC, the company noted.

In addition to exchanging knowledge and expertise, EDF and NTPC will explore new power project development opportunities in countries of mutual interest. A collaboration on technical services, including international consulting assignments, will also be explored, as well as joint pilot programmes in clean energy.
