Green Nod for NHPC’s 2,880 MW multi-purpose dam in Lower Dibang Valley

Related to NHPC’s 2880 MW Hydro Power project in Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has approved the construction of a 278-metre high concrete gravity dam. This is in line with upholding the environmental clearance given by ministry of environment forest and climate change three years ago.

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s  2,880 MW Multi-purpose dam will now be constructed at a 10 meter reduced height.  The dam was originally planned height of 288 metre. On commission the dam will be the country’s tallest.

The project was earlier rejected by the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) in July 2013. Later, the environment and power ministries later pushed the project by overruling earlier rejections. As a result, the environment clearance was subsequently obtained two years later.

The INR 25,658.50-crore (July 2016 price level) is flood moderation and power generation project. The project will affect around 115 families of five villages which are likely to be displaced. While another 744 families of 39 villages are likely to be affected due to the acquisition of land required for the project.
