For electricity supply in port area, JNPT signs an agreement with MSEDL

JNPT, the government-owned port operator, has recently signed an agreement with MSEDL, the electricity distribution arm of Maharashtra state electricity board, for the supply of power in the port area.

The premier container port of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), has said in a statement that it has signed an agreement for power supply in the port area with Maharashtra’s electricity distribution arm MSEDCL.

Following their Board of Trustees’ approval, Jawaharlal-Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) signed the Memorandum of Understanding on 24 December with Maharashtra, the port stated.

JNPT President Sanjay Sethi stated, “With this agreement, the process of legalizing electricity distribution once for all is resolved and will help JNPT to deliver its duties towards its stakeholders.”

The government-owned port operator said that with the agreement, JNPT became the first major port in the country to sign a Distribution Franchise Agreement (DFA) in compliance with the Electricity Act, 2003 and to overcome the obstacles in the supply of electricity.

Currently, over 50 percent of the total container cargo between major domestic ports in the country is handled by JNPT’s five container terminals.

JNPT through a concession agreement allotted land to three terminals at the port area on a 30-year lease. The supply of power to these terminals is the responsibility of JNPT, under the agreement.

These terminals are Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals and Gateway Terminals India Private Limited.

The JNPT, with the support of MSEDCL officials, had created a separate category for the JNPT, designated as “government / semi-government” to sign the franchise agreement, which would carry large weightage such as ports and defense, the JNPT said in the release.
