Bangalore Metro Rail will install solar panels on all of its new metro stations

The use of solar power will help BMRCL to cut down on its electricity bill payment to BESCOM, which is in the tune of around Rs 5 crore a month, currently.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is planning to install solar panels at its upcoming properties. For this BMRCL is partnering with private firms to move ahead with the utilization of solar energy at its upcoming metro stations

As stated in BMRCL’s annual report, solar-powered power systems will be installed at the stations and depot areas. Solar plants have already been installed by most Metro corporations across the country, to meet their daily needs for lighting and other auxiliary purposes. The leading metro corporation names include  – New Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, and Chennai, – which use solar-powered electric systems.

In view of BMRCL’s monthly electricity bill of Rs 5 crore, the use of solar power could reduce the corporation’s dependence on BESCOM. Consequently, the BMRCL will not be pressed to pass the burden onto the passengers.

There had been similar plans of solar panels installations for Baiyappanahalli and Peenya depots, but the projects never materialized. According to a statement given by a BMRCL official to the leading daily, the plan to install solar panels at Baiyappanahalli and Peenya depots has been put on hold.

He further stated that the Baiyappanahalli depot will be remodeled to accommodate the ORR Metro line. Consequently, BMRCL does not intend to install panels in these two depots.
