A total of 16 ethanol projects worth INR 3,290 crore have been approved in Assam: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam’s Government would provide necessary assistance and support to resolve investor issues to facilitate these ethanol projects commencement as soon as possible under the policy, says Sarma.
According to Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, that state has been able to attract 16 ethanol projects as a result of a consortium of OMCs floated bids for the long-term procurement of ethanol. The total investment for these 16 ethanol projects is valued at INR 3,290 crore.
Sarma met with the promoters of the seven ethanol manufacturing entities. These companies came forward to set up their plants under the Assam Ethanol Production Promotion Policy, that was declared in August 2021.
The promoters of these seven entities shared their latest developments and concerns with the Chief Minister during the meeting that was held at the Chief Minister’s office in Janata Bhawan. Also in attendance during the discussion were Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Rameswar Teli and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Chandramohan Patowary.
Sarma assured the promoters that the Government of Assam will provide all assistance necessary to resolve their pending issues so that the projects that fall under the policy can be expeditiously implemented.

The seven entities are all ready to begin construction. The commercial production of biofuel is expected to start in mid-2023.
To facilitate Ethanol proponents, Industries Department established a 24×7 support centre for the entities to obtain various approvals and clearance required to setup their plants.
The Industrial Development Corporation has provided land to six out of seven entities across the state. Among these are two units at IGC Matia, one unit each at Industrial Landbank in Sipajhar, ID Dhing, IGC Balipara and near Assam Plastic Park in Tinsukia.
It is estimated that these seven units will have an annual production capacity of 970 KLD with an investment of INR 1154 crore, giving employment to 1000 people directly and to nearly 4000 indirectly.
