A new 3DX™ SmartPilot drone solution from Sulzer Schmid enables highly flexible wind turbine blade inspections

3DXTM SmartPilot drone solution, a quick and highly portable blade inspection solution specifically designed for facilitating inspection campaigns in difficult terrain.

The Swiss company, Sulzer & Schmid Laboratories AG, has launched its 3DXTM SmartPilot drone solution. This quick and highly portable blade inspection solution is specifically designed to facilitate inspection campaigns in environments with complex logistical barriers

With the 3DXTM SmartPilot, operators can use portable equipment to deploy semi-autonomous drone inspections quickly and on-site

The compact design of 3DX™ SmartPilot makes it particularly well-suited for inspections of wind farms operating in very remote locations but also for ad-hoc inspections. It’s like carrying out inspections from a backpack. Deployable worldwide, our new plug-and-play solution is highly flexible and will overcome most logistical and customs restrictions. Once onsite, it can be deployed instantly.”, commented Tom Sulzer, Sulzer Schmid Co-founder and CEO.

Powered with Sulzer Schmid’s proprietary software, 3DX SmartPilot is compatible with most small DJI drones available off-the-shelf. In order to ensure optimal flight paths, a drone pilot is tasked with performing semi-autonomous inspections with the assistance of 3DX software. Within the 3DX Blade Platform, the inspection data is uploaded, processed, and analyzed.

The cloud-based 3DXTM Blade Platform is the most advanced data management system for blade inspections. The platform provides transparent asset management for wind turbine rotor blades based on data analytics and digital applications, offering actionable insights to optimize performance of renewable energy assets.

“This is the most economical solution because it only requires lower-cost hardware without proprietary payload. At the same time, it delivers all the value of the 3DX™ Blade Platform with no compromise on data processing and smart analytics. Thanks to this latest innovation, we can now ensure that the data of wind assets, no matter where they are located, is captured cost-effectively within Sulzer Schmid’s stringent quality standards.”, concluded Tom Sulzer.

Sulzer Schmid has been at the forefront of energy service innovation since its creation in 2016. By combining UAV technology and a sophisticated data analytics platform, the company can enable businesses to digitally inspect blades by providing high-quality, consistent visual inspection data. As a highly experienced and expert technology partner, Sulzer Schmid has been inspecting wind turbines around the world.
