Vestas India unveils new V155-3.3 MW low-wind turbine

Vestas introduces a new V155-3.3 MW wind turbine in the Indian market, optimized for low and ultra-low wind conditions.

Vestas, a Denmark based wind turbine firm, has introduced for the Indian market, a new version of wind turbines that has been optimized for low and ultra-low wind conditions. The company stated that the turbine would be manufactured and sourced locally in India.

The new turbine was revealed by Vestas’ Chief Executive Officer Henrik Andersen in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in first week of October 2020.

The company says the turbine will see a 67 percent rise in the swept area over V120-2.2 MW turbine, and the annual energy output of a 300-MW wind farm with less than 46 turbines will be up by more than three percent.

Vickram Jadhav, vice-president – sales, Vestas India said, “Built on the globally proven 4-MW platform, the new variant features a full-scale converter and faster active and reactive power during dynamic frequency and voltage events. It has an optimized blade design customized for the Indian wind conditions and also features market-specific towers up to 140-meter hub height to meet local transportation requirements.”

According to the company, the implementation of the prototypes has been planned for the third quarter of 2021, while development in series is projected to take place in the first quarter of 2022.

The company also stated that a new converter factory would be built in Chennai following with the company’s previously announced new nacelle and hub factory that is currently under construction in Chennai.  On the other hand, the company is planning to expand its current blade manufacturing plant in Ahmedabad to increase its manufacturing in India.

By the next year, the production increase will add about 1,000 new jobs to Vestas’s in addition to approximately 2,600 people currently employed with Vestas India. India’s increased output will not only serve the increasing wind market in the region but will also serve as a strategic export hub for the company, according to the company’s press release.

President of the Vestas Asia-Pacific, Clive Turton, stated that in the past two decades, the company has built nearly 4 GW of wind turbines in India to provide more jobs at its existing hub.
