Toshiba launches 20Ah-HP SCiB Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery

Toshiba launches 20Ah-HP SCiB Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery

With its high power and energy output, it can be used in many applications including vehicles, industrial equipment, and energy storage systems.

The new battery cell is the latest addition to the SCiBTM product line of Toshiba Corporation, a company dedicated to advancing carbon neutrality through its technologies, products and services. The company has recently announced the launch of an innovative 20Ah-HP lithium-ion rechargeable battery cell that delivers both high energy and high power at the same time.

Until now, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries have had to make a choice between high-energy and high-power characteristics. A high-energy battery, for instance, allows an EV to run longer on one charge – but it reduces power input and output and extends charge times. As a result of Toshiba’s experience in high-energy and high-power products, the company developed a new cell that successfully combines both capabilities.

The cell is ideal for heavy-load applications requiring high power input and output. Additionally, it is suitable for use in applications that require heat suppression and continuous operation such as rapid charging of commercial vehicles, regenerative power systems for rolling stock, and industrial equipment.

Toshiba’s new cell is of the same size as Toshiba’s current 20Ah product, making it easy for existing customers to upgrade to the new product with the same module pack and is now available to order worldwide.

Product Features

  • Exceptional heat suppression: By reducing the cell’s resistance by about 40%, Toshiba’s new 20Ah-HP cell delivers 1.7 times more input and 1.6 times more output than Toshiba’s current 20Ah cell. In this way, heat is effectively suppressed when a large amount of current is applied, allowing simpler cooling techniques to be employed. In addition to reducing over voltage, the lowered resistance allows the battery to operate in a wider range of state-of-charge (SOC).
  • Long life: A lower internal resistance of the new 20Ah-HP cell enables it to last longer than the current 20Ah cell since it suppresses heat during continuous charging and discharging. Following 8,000 cycles of charge/discharge, the cell maintained almost 100% capacity, while the capacity of the current 20Ah cell decreased by 10%.
  • Compatibility is simple: In addition to its improved input and output power, the new 20Ah-HP cell retains the same size as the current 20Ah cell, which allows customers to upgrade to the improved performance while maintaining the same module pack.
