Toshiba ESS and Meidensha have partnered to develop a new type Of GIS

The companies are jointly developing a GIS for 72 kV / 84 kV that will be powered by a natural gas free of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).


A new type of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is being developed by Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation and Meidensha Corporation together. In partnership, the two companies are developing a GIS for 72 kV / 84 kV that will be powered by a natural gas free of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

Looking at the increase in demand for environmentally friendly products in the GIS market, the decision has been made, to accelerate the development and commercialization of the product. Both manufacturers plan to finish type tests by March 2022, in order to confirm their performance meets international standards.

To meet insulation requirements and ensure high-current interruption, the GIS  under joint development uses a Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) for high-current interruptions, as well as dry air for the main circuit insulation and for the switching parts of the disconnector and earthing switches. 

The entire GIS is under the charge of Toshiba ESS, and VCB, the major component, is the responsibility of Meidensha.

In contrast, Toshiba ESS has been developing alternative technologies for SF6 for more than 15 years.”
