Sustainable Development Goals should be a priority for the private sector: Kant

At a virtual summit – Amitabh Kant, the CEO of Niti Aayog, pointed out that for the government to translate policies into actions, support from the private sector and industry is needed so as to meet the country’s sustainable development goals.

Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant speaking at a virtual session of the day-long SDG Summit urged private companies to focus their attention on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and become green companies of the future in order to gain access to low-interest capital.

The SDG Summit saw participation from the heads of various companies from a variety of sectors.

For the government to translate policies into actions, the private sector and industry are essential partners in meeting the country’s sustainable development goals, he pointed out.

According to him, India needs to progress faster on nutrition, learning results, women in the economy, employment for all, and reducing pollution in order to meet the targets under SDGs on time.

He said the government has already adopted several initiatives in these areas and has set up a system for monitoring and evaluating progress.

Indian companies should also invest in innovation, research, and development (R&D). Failing to start investing in commercially focused research and development right away will make it difficult to survive in the global economy, he warned.

The country has made a global pledge to use non-fossil fuels for 40 percent of its cumulative installed power capacity as part of its nationally determined contributions. He added that the renewable energy sector can bring in 10 billion dollars of foreign investments annually.

The country is also investing in expanding its domestic production capacity for batteries, electric vehicles, and solar panels, he stated further.
