As part of an energy transition drive in rural areas, Smart Power India (SPI), a Rockefeller Foundation subsidiary in India, and Adani Solar have signed a non-financial and non-commercial memorandum of understanding (MoU). The companies will jointly be encouraging solar energy deployment in the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha under the agreement.
As stated in the official press release, the MoU aims to promote the usage of rooftop solar panels and deploy 5 MW of solar to rural and peri-urban areas in these states through Adani Solar’s channel partners.
Mukesh Khandelwal, director C&I, Smart Power India stated that, “This MoU aims to promote inclusive economic growth, build resilient communities, and create an ecosystem that supports the expansion of sustainable businesses that provide renewable energy for productive use, along with expanding the economic activity to the underserved in rural India.”
Initially, the project will begin with five channel partners in UP before being extended to other states.
“Since most of the energy produced is consumed on site, there is a very low loss associated with this source. Adani Solar has a large network of channel partners that will take advantage of Smart Power India’s extensive experience and expertise to help further the adoption of solar energy,” explained Cecil Augustine, head of retail at Adani Solar.
Rahul Bhutiani, Adani Solar’s head of sales and marketing, stated that, “MSME segment in rural and peri-urban markets will drive the rooftop solar space in the coming two to three years.”
