SJVN to develop over 5 GW of Hydro Power in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh government has approved the allotment of five hydro power projects totalling 5097 MW to SJVN for which a memorandum of understanding would be signed shortly.

SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Shree Nand Lal Sharma met with Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Shree Chowna Mein in New Delhi on 29th Dec 2021. On the agenda for the meeting was the development of hydroelectric projects in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The meeting resulted in the State Govt of Arunachal Pradesh approving the allotment of 05 hydroelectric power projects with a total capacity of 5097 MW to SJVN for which a memorandum of understanding would be signed shortly. Among these projects are Etalin HEP (3097 MW), Attunli HEP (680 MW), Emini HEP (500 MW), Amulin HEP (420 MW) and Mihumdon HEP (400 MW).

Shree Sharma emphasized that he has always favored the concept of Integrated River Basin Development, i.e. the allocation of hydro projects in one basin to one developer, which would allow for the most efficient use of manpower, infrastructure, and financial resources. This novel concept has been accepted by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh in the allocation of these projects, he noted further.

Development of these projects, with a tentative investment of Rs 60,000 Crore, will be carried out by SJVN in the next 8-10 years.  In his remarks, he stated that the Projects, upon commissioning, are expected to generate about 20,000 million units of clean energy annually. Detailed Projects Reports have been prepared for some of these projects while others are in the survey and investigation stages.

Expressing his gratitude Shree Sharma stated that with the allotment of these projects, SJVN will have significant footprints in the North Eastern region of the country, allowing it to contribute to the development of the region as well as the overall prosperity of the State.

SJVN has a diversified portfolio in the field of Hydro, Solar, Wind, Thermal and Power Transmission across India and neighboring countries of Nepal & Bhutan. In recent years, the company has grown exponentially, and it currently has 41 projects in various stages of development with a total capacity of about 16000 MW.

As part of its ambitious goal, SJVN aims to reach 5000 MW of installed capacity by 2023, 12000 MW by 2030, and 25000 MW by 2040.
