In a notification, the Jharkhand government announced that industrial units with captive power plants would be exempt from electricity duty for five years from 2016.

The exemption of 100 percent electricity duty is retroactively granted to both new and existing industrial units.

A gazette notification by the commercial tax department issued on September 30, 2021 states, “The Governor of Jharkhand is pleased to have an exclusion from the payment of 100% Electricity Duty for a period of five years from the date of commissioning of the power plant for new or current industrial units establishing a captive power plant for self-consumption or captive use in relation to power used by the plant.”

As per the notification, it will take effect on April 1, 2016, and will continue until March 31, 2021.

This exemption was granted according to the Jharkhand Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy, 2016.
