Indian Railways has set an ambitious plan of electrification of its entire board gauge network by 100 percent by 2023.
The work is going on and once the target is achieved, it will help the Railways save about INR 14,500 crore per year on fuel bills.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Railways, the Indian Railways have set a target of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030.
Also, the Indian Railways have ambitious plans to complete electrification of the total IR system by 2023.
As of now around 66 percent of the total track length of the railway is electrified. The organization rail tracks electrification has increased to 4,378 km in 2019-20 up from 1,176 km in 2014-15.
In addition, the Indian Railways also has an equally ambitious target in terms of the generation of renewable energy using assets of the Railway.
During the current year, the Indian Railways launched a pilot solar power project of 1.5 MW with the purpose of meeting its energy needs.
This pilot is part of a program that targets to generate 20 GW of solar power on railway land by 2030.
The ministry stated that on completion of these set goals, the Indian Railways will achieve a unique feat among the world’s major railways to run indigenously produced electric-powered trains without reliance on imported fossil fuels.
