PM inaugurates 60 MW Tuirial hydropower project in Mizoram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 60-Megawatt Tuirial Hydro power Project in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Mr Modi said it is the first major central government project to be successfully commissioned in the state.

Built at a cost of INR 1302 crore (USD 202.85 million) in the North East Indian state of Mizoram on the Tuirial River. Although, the Tuirial Hydro-power project was initiated in 1998, it took close to 20 years to commission its two units. While the first unit of the hydropower station was placed into service in late August, the second one was commissioned in late November.

The hydropower project located near Kolasib also features the earthfill and gravity dam constructed over Tuirial River as a Government of India project that was executed by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation.

The project was first cleared by the previous NDA government led by Atal Behari Vajpayee in 1998 but got delayed. Mr Modi said the completion of this project is a reflection of the Centre’s commitment to complete ongoing projects and usher in a new era of development in the North Eastern region.
