Odisha government and Bharat Petroleum signed a MoU for renewable energy development.
Green energy is a promising future in Odisha, thanks to the booming steel industry and the state also has a lot of potential for producing green energy from ethanol, solar, and hydrogen.
In a significant step towards speeding up the promotion of green energy in the state, the Odisha Government and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bhupendra Singh Poonia, Managing Director Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL), and Amit Garg, Executive Director Renewable Energy, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
The agreement is for a five-year period to work together in the fields of the feasibility of setting up renewable energy and green hydrogen plants (both for domestic and export customers).
It also includes collaboration on round the clock (RTC) power for consumers and proposed green hydrogen plants, setting up of requisite infrastructure, training, and knowledge sharing, etc.
The upcoming plants will help supplement the power requirements of heavy industries in the state of Odisha, which is already a power-surplus state and will help it further strengthen it position in power.
IPICOL said in a statement that “Green Hydrogen would help the industries to cut their overall emissions of greenhouse gases, contributing to the overall objectives of the Government of India’s INDC targets.”
Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, Chief Secretary, commented, “We have a lot of natural resources, and because of the developing steel industry, green energy is a significant deal in Odisha, and it has a lot of potential for producing green energy from ethanol, solar, and hydrogen… In addition, we have large ports and are building new ones, which will assist BPCL in exporting green hydrogen and ammonia to other nations.”
“Odisha is today the single largest manufacturer of steel in India, Principal Secretary Industries, Hemant Sharma said. More than 33 per of India’s steelmaking capacity is now in Odisha, that makes it the primary prospect of green hydrogen and green ammonia production. Because of the value addition policy, the demand is only going to increase in future,” he added.
Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and MD of BPCL, stated, “There is an increasing need for green energy. Odisha distinguishes itself via its unique projects. Many sections of Odisha have a high potential for solar and green-based ethanol energy generation.”..
Singh went on to say that by combining expertise and technology, BPCL aims to be the world’s most admired energy company. We at BPCL intend to achieve Net-Zero emissions in Scope I and II by 2040, given our ongoing pursuit of customer service quality excellence.
BPCL plans to spend 25,000 crore on building a renewable energy capacity of 10 gigawatts over the next 20 years.
