Hitachi Energy wins contract from Indian Railways worth over INR 160 crores

Hitchi Energy has announced that it has secured an order worth over INR 160 crores from Indian Railways for electric components.

Indian Railways has ordered key electric components worth more than INR160 crore from Hitachi Energy India Ltd. for their electrification projects that will enable the Railways to achieve 100% electrification by 2023.

According to the company release, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) and Diesel Loco Modernisation Works (DMW), both part of Indian Railways, have placed orders with Hitachi Energy for traction transformers for passenger and freight locomotives between October and December 2021.

In India’s drive towards net zero carbon emissions, railway electrification is a key element. India reaffirmed its commitment to switch to electricity for transportation and reduce its economy’s carbon intensity by 45% by 2030 at the recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).  Hitachi said that complete route electrification is one of the most important aspects in this regard.

N. Venu, Hitachi’s MD and CEO, is quoted as saying: “Electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system, and Hitachi Energy is committed to accelerating the electrification and decarbonisation of the world’s transportation and rail sectors.”

India Railways is an old customer for Hitachi Energy, and these new orders confirm Hitachi Energy’s position as a trusted partner for the rail industry, he added further.

Train performance and operator service are affected by traction transformers, which are critical components in the traction chain. Hitachi Energy transformers power nearly half of the world’s electric locomotives and train sets, according to the release.

It is estimated that Hitachi has installed over 30,000 transformers across the globe for essential train functions such as traction, lighting, ventilation, braking, signaling, and communication.
