Gujarat will host India’s largest solar project built by NTPC

The upcoming NTPC solar project will have a capacity almost twice that of the Bhadla solar park in Rajasthan, currently the largest solar plant in the country.

The subsidiary of NTPC that is responsible for renewable energy projects is to develop the country’s largest solar photovoltaic project in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch.

According to available information, the planned project will be nearly twice as big as Bhadla solar park in Rajasthan, now the country’s largest solar power plant.

The state-run utility’s renewables arm NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL) announced on Tuesday that it will be building India’s single -largest solar photovoltaic project at a single site in Rann of Kutch, Gujarat.

As noted in a company statement, NTPC REL has received approval from the renewable energy ministry to build the 4750 MW solar power project in Gujarat. Commercial-scale green hydrogen production will also be done at the park by NTPC REL, as per the statement.

The company is also actively engaged in floating solar photovoltaic technology. Recently, India’s largest floating solar farm, with a 10 MW capacity, was commissioned at NTPC’s Simhadri thermal power plant in Andhra Pradesh. A total of another 15 MW could be online by August.

There is also a floating solar energy project of 100 MW capacity slated for construction on the reservoir of Ramagundam thermal plant is at an advanced stage of development.

In order to transition from the country’s largest coal burner to a green energy leader, NTPC is investing in renewable energy, especially the solar project.

It is the goal of the NTPC to build 60 GW (gigawatts) of renewable energy capacity by 2032. As of now, with 70 power plants, the company has 66 GW of installed capacity and 18 GW of capacity is currently under construction.
