Construction of Unit 6 begins at the Kudankulam NPP in Tamil Nadu
At Kudankulam NPP, the equipment required for installation at Units 5& 6 is being delivered now and construction is in progress.
The construction of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 6 was inaugurated on Tuesday with the pouring of the first concrete in the reactor building’s foundation slab.
On June 20, the first concrete was laid at the power unit No. 5, and on December 20, the first concrete was poured at the power unit No. 6. Construction is in progress at Kudankulam NPP as the needed equipment is currently being supplied for Units 5 and 6.
Rosatom, the Russian nuclear major that is constructing the NPP, also reported that work is under way on Unit 3 in preparation for the installation of the reactor pressure vessel.
Andrey Lebedev, ASE JSC Vice-President for Projects in India and Prospective Projects, noted that Kudankulam’s third stage, which pertains to the main construction period, will provide additional power capacity to support the industrial and commercial development of the Tamil Nadu region and India as a whole. Furthermore, the project will enhance our friendly countries’ prospects for expanding peaceful nuclear cooperation using the most advanced projects and high-capacity nuclear power units of the Russian design.
The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (also called the KKNPP or Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant) in the Tirunelveli district of the Tamil Nadu state is the largest nuclear power station in India.
The General Framework Agreement (GFA) was signed on April 10, 2014, on the construction of Units 3, 4, subsequently the negotiations with the Indian side began for the construction of Units 5, 6, upon which the agreement was reached that these Units would be constructed in accordance with the same design as for Units 3, 4.
A Credit Protocol approved by the Intergovernmental Agreement on December 05, 2008 and the GFA for Kudankulam NPP Units 5 & 6 were signed on June 1, 2017.
