Chandigarh targets 60 MW of solar power generation over the next 2 years

The Chandigarh UT administration plans to generate more than 60 MW of solar power over the next two years, furthering its Solar City mission.

The Union Territory of Chandigarh has planned for the next 2 years, i.e. 2021 and 2022, that it will generate over 60 MW through solar power.

In this context, the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society, a nodal agency that is responsible for setting up of solar plants in Chandigarh, has prepared a plan. This plan covers various departments such as the Electricity Department, Municipal Corporation, Education, Engineering, and Prison Department.

In a recent review meeting chaired by the Union Territory advisor Manoj Parida, it was decided that the differences between the various departments will be resolved and they will be encouraged to act as a team.

Apart from this, the Union Territory administration has recently decided that the installation of up to 250 KW power solar plant can now be undertaken without the need for any electrical inspection.

So far, the Union Territory Administration has achieved a target of about 37.5 MW. To encourage more people to set up rooftop solar projects, the Central Government has released a grant of INR 5 crore to the administration. This grant will be used to give solar subsidies to the people who will be installing solar plants on their roofs.

This amount will be used by the Chandigarh Union Territory Administration to transfer subsidies directly to the account of qualified people.

Recently the government has notified that under the new subsidy scheme applicable for setting up rooftop solar unit, the subsidy on panels has been increased from 30 percent to 40 percent for plants up to 3 kWp capacity, while for solar units from 4 kWp to 10 kWp the subsidy will be 20 percent.

On the other hand, there is no provision of subsidy allocated for solar plants above 10 kWp. Earlier there was a provision of 30 percent subsidy to all, irrespective of the capacity of the solar plant.
