Adani plans to build India’s biggest onshore wind turbine

Adani will be manufacturing this 5.2MW wind turbine with technologies from W2E Wind to Energy GmbH in Germany.

Adani Group is set to erect a 5.2MW wind turbine prototype at Mundra, Gujarat. It will be the largest wind turbine in the country and one of the largest on-shore machines in the world when it is completed.

According to available information, Adani’s plan is to develop a prototype, test it, and then scale up manufacturing for self-consumption, sale in India, and export.

Germany based W2E Wind to Energy GmbH provided the technology for this machine. The 5.2 MW machine in the W2EWind portfolio includes a 165-meter-diameter circular blade that can be put in a 140-meter-tall tower. The machine is capable of generating electricity at wind speeds as low as 3 metres per second and as high as 20 metres per second. The optimal power output can be obtained at wind speeds of 12 metres per second.

Turbines with capacity more than 4 MW upto as large as 14 MW are often connected with offshore projects. However, 5.2 MW onshore turbines are uncommon and almost never encountered in India.

As of now the turbine’s ownership is unknown. Adani Green Energy Ltd and Adani New Industries Ltd are two of the group’s renewable energy firms (ANIL).

For some time, the Adani Group has been attempting to join the wind turbine manufacturing business, and has been in negotiations with Regen Powertech, Inox, and Suzlon about a possible acquisition.

Adani Green intends to construct 45GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, which is three times the present portfolio.
