A phased rollout of prepaid electricity meters is planned for Sikkim
Sikkim government has planned to install prepaid smart energy meters in all major cities and towns by December 2021 along with further plans of penetrating the rural areas soon.
The north-eastern state of Sikkim is all set to install prepaid electricity meters in a phased manner across the state in order to ensure operational efficiency and sustainable use of energy.
On Wednesday, state power minister M N Sherpa announced that the state government will install prepaid electricity meters in the state.
A prepaid smart energy meter is planned to be installed in all of Sikkim’s major cities and towns by December 2021 as part of the Centre’s Integrated Power Development Scheme, he informed while speaking to reporters.
He further informed that 36,940 single-phase energy meters supporting 10kw load and 3,011 three-phase energy meters supporting 45kw load have already been distributed.
According to the minister, these meters will be installed in Gangtok, Singtam, Namchi, Gyalshing, Rangpo, Mangan and Jorethang. The exercise will also be undertaken in rural areas soon, which will help save energy, he added.
As per Sherpa, consumers can purchase and recharge using vouchers ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 30,000, depending on their needs and convenience. These prepaid vouchers can be obtained through the ‘Sahaj Liberty App’ or from the State Bank of Sikkim.
He added further that the policy has been adopted under the direction and guidance of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for the benefit of consumers and to ensure operational efficiency and sustainable usage of energy.
