India’s first green hydrogen microgrid project awared by NTPC
It was noted that the project would pave way for large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects in the country.
A standalone fuel-cell-based green hydrogen microgrid project in Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh, was awarded by NTPC on Wednesday. This will be India’s first and largest green hydrogen-based energy storage installations, as well as one of the world’s largest.
The project is considered to serve as a precursor to large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects and will be useful for evaluating and creating multiple microgrids in off-grid and strategic locations across the country.
With the use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. For the project, a state-of-the-art 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser would produce green hydrogen, which would be powered by the company’s floating solar power plant at Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh.
A 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell would store the hydrogen created during daylight hours at high pressure. The system would run on its own from 5 p.m. until 7 a.m., according to reports. NTPC designed this unique project arrangement entirely on its own.
According to the statement, it is a one-of-a-kind project for India that would open the way for decarbonization in distant portions of the country like Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and other locations that have previously relied on diesel generators. The project is also in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral territory by 2070.
The company has also signed a contract with the Union territory of Ladakh for a green hydrogen mobility project, which will be jointly executed by the company green energy arm NTPC REL and NVVN.
With 47 NTPC stations and 26 joint venture stations, NTPC has a total installed capacity of 67,907 MW. NTPC, as part of its diversification strategy, plans to mix hydrogen with natural gas for the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network as part of its diversification strategy.
